Unlike gastric surgery, bariatric surgery method, restricts or reduces nutrient absorption and alters intestinal functions. The method is called “gastric bypass” or “Roux-en-Y”.
During gastric bypass surgery, a small pouch is first formed in the stomach and then the formed pouch is directly connected to the small intestine.
After gastric bypass surgery, when patients eat, food first enters the small stomach formed in the form of a pouch and then directly enters the small intestine.
Gastric bypass surgery is available in different procedures and variations and can be performed using both open and closed techniques. The standard procedure consists of two stages. In the first stage, a new stomach is formed at the entrance to the stomach in the form of a small volume pocket (forestomach). The new stomach and most of the old stomach are separated from each other and deactivated without removal from the body. In the second phase of the operation, the small intestine is shortened.
The small intestine is shortened by an average of 50-75 cm. The small intestine is connected to the new stomach, which is created next to the esophagus. The cut part of the intestine is reunited with the intestine about 70 cm away. Gastric bypass surgery/bypassing the stomach results in smaller stomach volume and limited food intake. Digestion and absorption of nutrients now take place on the shortened digestive tract.
