It is said that the ancient city of Phaselis was founded by Rhodesian colonists in the 7th century BC on a small peninsula extending to the Mediterranean Sea. In the founding legend, it is said that the colonists responded to the suggestions of corn or dried fish to the local people with the request of fish.
Its geographical location indicates that it is an important port city.

The most monumental structure to date is aqueducts. The water needed by the city was brought from a spring located on the hill to the North. There are three agoras, one opposite the theatre and the other two to the right of the main street leading to the South Harbour. Inside the Agora opposite the theater are the remains of a small Basilica belonging to the Byzantine period.
